Dayton families now have expanded access to protected cycling paths in Five Rivers MetroParks after the agency completed surface repairs on two riverfront segments in late June 2026.

Residents seek nearby outdoor activity as daytime temperatures climb above 80 degrees and schools release students for summer break. Local wellness programs promote these trails as entry points for consistent movement without requiring advanced skills or long drives.

Eastwood and Wegerzyn segments

The 3.2-mile lakeside loop at Eastwood MetroPark begins at the parking area off East Patterson Road and stays entirely separate from motor traffic. A second option starts at the Wegerzyn Gardens entrance on Shiloh Springs Road and follows a 2.8-mile riverside spur that links to the larger Great Miami River Trail. Both routes pass restrooms, water fountains and shaded benches every half mile.

City records list 52,400 trail visits through the first six months of 2026, with 37 percent of users traveling in groups that included riders under age 12. Bike rentals at the Riverscape station cost $12 for the first hour and $8 for each additional hour.

Beginners should enter at the Eastwood lot on weekends when volunteer marshals from the Dayton Cycling Club station themselves at the three intersections with service roads. Helmets and child seats are available for $25 at the on-site kiosk. Riders can download the free MetroParks map that marks the exact mileage and elevation changes, all under 40 feet on these sections.
